Golden Ears is close enough to the Lower Mainland to feel like an easy Saturday plan and big enough to punish anyone who arrives without deciding which part of the park they actually meant. The good news is that a great family day here can be very simple: get the pass if you need one, choose one base, bring food and dry clothes, and let the lake do most of the work.
Start with the easiest version of the day
For many families, the easy answer is Alouette South Beach. You can drive to the day-use area, find picnic tables and use a sand-and-gravel beach without turning the outing into a backcountry mission. During the main summer season, BC Parks lists drinking-water taps, flush toilets and a change house; winter service is much more limited.
That does not mean South Beach is the only good choice. It means it is a dependable place to start when the group contains children, coolers, towels and at least one person who will suddenly need a washroom at the exact moment the vehicle is unpacked.
Deal with the day-use pass before the snack debate
Golden Ears pass rules change with the season, so check the official BC Parks page every time. For 2026, vehicle passes are required for the parking lots beyond the Spirea trailhead on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and holidays from May 15 through September 7. The passes open two days before the visit at 7 a.m. Pacific time.
Download, screenshot or print the pass before leaving home. Cell service is poor or unavailable in many parts of the park, including South Beach, which is a beautiful feature until your entry pass is sitting inside an email that refuses to load. Also download the route and the park map while the internet is still feeling cooperative.

Choose one main event, then stop planning
A beach day, picnic and casual shoreline wander is already a complete outing. If the kids want a walk, check the current trail advisories and official map before choosing one. BC Parks posted trail impacts after a 2026 storm event, which is a useful reminder that a trail name saved from somebody else's post is not the same thing as current access.
Seasonal canoe, kayak and pedal-boat rentals may also operate at South Beach when weather allows. Treat those as a possible bonus, not the activity holding the entire day together. If the rental is closed, the lake is still there and the picnic food should remain emotionally available.
Build a small family base camp
Put down one blanket, establish where the food and dry clothes live, and give every child a clear place for shoes and towels. This is less about military organization and more about avoiding the traditional family-beach search for the one missing sandal.

Treat the lake like a lake, not a supervised pool
South Beach has a marked swimming area during part of the summer season, but there are no lifeguards in BC Parks. Stay close enough to the kids that supervision means more than occasionally looking up from the cooler. The lake is cold, conditions change and powerboats may operate outside the designated area.
BC Parks also warns about strong currents near the mouth of Gold Creek. The practical family rule is simple: use the marked area when it is operating, keep younger or weaker swimmers within immediate reach and move to a different activity when the water or weather stops looking friendly.
Make the dog plan before the dog sees the lake
Dogs are not allowed in the main South Beach day-use area. A designated leashed-dog section sits between the boat launch and the canoe-rental shop and is reached from parking lot one. Leashed dogs are also allowed at the North Beach day-use area near Gold Creek, subject to the current park rules.
Decide which version of the day you are having before arrival. Discovering the pet restrictions after unloading children, food and one extremely enthusiastic dog is the kind of family teamwork exercise nobody needs.
Pack for the predictable problems
The best gear for this trip is the gear that prevents a small inconvenience from becoming the day's main story. A warm drink in shoulder season, a cold bottle in summer, somewhere to put wet clothes and enough easy food for the drive home will do more for family morale than an overloaded adventure wagon.

The drive out is much nicer when the family leaves before everyone is cold, hungry and personally offended by their wet socks. Pick a rough departure time before the day starts, then move it earlier if the weather turns or the fun has clearly peaked.
On the way home, hand out the reserved car snack, put wet gear straight into its bag and accept that some gravel will be travelling with you. A successful Golden Ears day is not measured by hours stayed or activities completed. It is measured by whether the kids would come back.
